PATCHWORK QUILT
It was in 1963 that Willy Fleckhaus designed the rainbow colours of the Edition Suhrkamp. And back then they held particular promise "because the land behind them was so grey and overcast", according to Die Zeit. Fleckhaus was probably the most influential post-war graphic artist, a self-made man without any training, who designed optically ground-breaking magazines such as twen and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung supplement. Neither of them exists anymore, but four new first editions continue to be published in the Edition Suhrkamp each month, a total of more than 2,100 titles to date. Their content is intended to "show the state of contemporary awareness and the political situation in a changing world". The country is rather grey and overcast once again. Only the rainbow colours still shine with promise.
