Dário Fonseca, Mosambique

Working title: Mahla

Ermelinda suffers from her brutal husband, who wastes the little money he earns on booze. One day after Jerry has beaten her and she learns that she is pregnant again she decides to leave him. She purchases a suitcase and a plastic football for her son, and incidentally takes the same bus her husband is on, sitting at the very rear. As Jerry steals a passenger's briefcase, the bus stops and a number of people aboard threaten to burn Jerry with a petrol-soaked tyre around his neck. Emelinda witnesses the scene, climbs off the bus and begs for Jerry's life. The situation escalates, and suddenly loud cracks of thunder are to be heard, the earth quakes, smoke rises in a distance. The ammunition arsenal in Mahlazine has exploded. That is where Ermelinda and Jerry wanted to take the bus in order to pick up their son from the nearby school. They comb through town looking for their son. When they find him - the explosions and devastations surrounding them are unending - Ermelinda jumps a car passing by together with her son, leaving Jerry behind forever.
