Jury Statement:
The competition winner is: "You Should Have the Body", by Michael Masarof.
This is a good short film, well directed and well structured, that tells a modest, simple story on an important topic. The director shows a good control of the medium: the film is well cast, acted, and photographed, and the use of music is fine. The open ending works very well in context, carrying the strength of the theme in today's world. The required theme is clear and well represented.
The weaker part of the film may be in the writing and dialogue, which can be a little heavy and formulaic at times. We would recommend that the director work on developing this aspect of his craft on his future projects.
Overall, we are proud to award the number one prize to Michael Masarof.

Our runner up is "God Looks Like Me", by Osato Dixon.
While this short film is technically competent and reasonably well directed, it does not address and explore the competition's topic. That was our main concern. In addition, the director tries to handle too many topics and cannot seem to make up his mind on which story to tell. The acting is respectable but could be improved, as could the sound, which is problematic at times. We feel that with more rigor the filmmaker could achieve good work. He needs to try to handle fewer stories, and instead strengthen their development. In God Looks Like Me, for example, he could emphasize the relationship between the younger sister and her older brother, which is a subtle and delicate topic.
