Autobiographical Comics

This summer, 2010, you will be in South America. What are your hopes and expectations for this trip?

It’s not the first time I can go to South America, thanks to the Goethe-Institut. After Argentina, Peru and Venezuela I am going to visit Bolivia and Brazil. And I am very much looking forward to getting to know people there who are interested in comics from Germany. And to speak and work with draughtsmen who create comics there. Maybe a joint project will emerge.

What are you looking forward to most of all?

Being on the road. In thought and deed. And tanking up my brain with new images.

Will you incorporate your trip in a comic?

That’s my plan. I have been keeping a comic diary for several years now, that I publish on my website under the title “heldentage” (i.e. heroic days). And I am going to do a few strips about my trip to South America for it. We’ll see if something happens during the trip that then develops into a plot for a longer story. You can’t plan something like that in advance.

What are you currently working on?

Right now I’m writing the script for a new graphic novel. Thematically, it deals with travel. Hiking, to be exact. But I am still very much at the beginning and still very unsure if it will ever turn into a book. I also regularly draw my comic short stories for various newspapers and magazines (Tagesspiegel, DeinSpiegel, etc.), I’m doing some illustration commissions and keeping my comic diary.
