Biography of Gerhard Seyfried

  • born in Munich in 1948
  • 1963–67, apprenticeship as industrial clerk
  • 1967, trained as commercial artist
  • from 1967, study of art and graphics at Akademie für das Graphische Gewerbe, Munich
  • from 1970, freelance illustrator and caricaturist for advertising agencies, local companies, and drawings for Das Blatt, Munich
  • based in Berlin since 1976
  • since 1978, several study trips to the USA
  • since 1990, has worked with Ziska Riemann
  • since 1998, author and scriptwriter
  • 1999, first working trip to Namibia
  • 2003, second working trip to Namibia
  • 2003, working trip to Switzerland
  • 2004 return to Berlin

Awards and prizes:

  • 1990, Max-und-Moritz prize for best German-language comic artist
  • 2007 Wilhelm Busch Promotional Prize

Comic about the Holocaust

A comic entitled Die Suche (i.e. The Search) tells the story of a Jewish family murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz. Much discussed: whether young people can and should be taught about the Holocaust using comics.
