Biography of Barbara Yelin

  • Born in Munich in 1977.
  • 1999–2000 Course of study in illustration at the Bildkunst Akademie Hamburg.
  • 2000–2004 Course of study in illustration at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW), master’s degree for her thesis work, the pictorial narration Le Visiteur.
  • She has been living in Berlin since 2004, and works there as a comic artist and illustrator.
  • Since 2005 she has worked for and contributed to SPRING, a magazine for women illustrators and comic artists.
  • 2011 Guest at the Goethe-Institut Cairo. Leads a three-part workshop with Egyptian comic artists, project title: Revolution Comics. The blog Comic-Reisejournal Kairo arose during her stay
  • 2011-2012 Daily comic strip Riekes Notizen for the daily newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau
  • 2011/2012 Guest professor at the Saar Academy of Fine Arts (Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar / HBK, Saarbrücken)
  • 2012 Goethe-Institut New Delhi: Documentation of Indo-German Urban Mela
  • 2015 Designing the multi-part web comic Der Sommer ihres Lebens (i.e. the summer of her life) together with author Thomas von Steinaecker

Awards and prizes:

  • 2016 Max and Moritz Prize as „Best German-Language Comic Artist“
  • 2016 Prix Cheminots de la BD historique et sociale (i.e railway association award for historical and social comic art) for Irmina, awarded by the French railway company SNCF
  • 2015 Bayerischer Kunstförderpreis (Bavarian state award for the advancement of the arts) 2015 in the category of literature for Irmina
  • 2015 Peng! – The Münchner Comicpreis (Munich comic award) for Irmina in the category Best German-Language Comic“
  • 2015 Prix Artemisia 2015 for Irmina, awarded by the Association Artemisia, which promotes women comic artists.
  • 2014 Tagesspiegel-Jurypreis (Tagesspiegel jury award) „Best Comic of 2014“ for Irmina
  • 2008 Bernd Pfarr-Sondermann-Prize as „Best Newcomer“, awarded by the daily newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau at the Frankfurt Book Fair
  • 2005 Sonderpreis (special award) bei  „The Art of Der Spiegel“, Berlin
  • 2003 The Hans Meid Foundation’s incentive award for illustration, Hamburg
