1961 - 1963 Attends the Braunschweig college

1963 Abitur (school leaving exams)

Studied German in Munich and Paris

1967/1968 Member of the German socialist student organisation(SDS)

1971 Obtains doctorate in philosophy

1972 - 1982 Co-editor of Autoren-Edition

1981 - 1983 Lived in Rome

1989/2002 Literature prize of the city of Munich

1990 German Youth Literature Prize

2001 Tukan-Prize; Literature Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Arts

2002/2003 City writer of Bergen

2003 Schubart Literature Prize; Erik-Reger Prize

2005 Bamberg Poetics lectureship

2006 Jakob-Wassermann- Prize; Premio Napoli for Rot

2009 Heinrich Böll Prize
