1938

First poems published, finishes school


1939

Apprenticeship in the Boysen bookstore and acting lessons with the actor Helmut Gmelin

 

1941

Employed with the Landesbühne Osthannover theatre in March, drafted into military service in November


 

1942/43

Borchert is wounded and falls ill with diphtheria. He is accused of self-mutilation but later acquitted. He is retained in custody and convicted of making ‘defeatist comments’. In November he is transferred to the Eastern front, and in December is admitted to an epidemic unit with jaundice and typhus.


 

1943

Works as a cabaret artist


 

1944

Sentenced to nine months imprisonment for undermining of military morale and later sent to the front line

 

1945

Flees from French prisoner-of-war camp and returns to Hamburg seriously ill. Becomes assistant director at the Hamburg Theatre

 
1946

Die Hundeblume (The Dandelion), poetry collection Laterne, Nacht und Sterne (Streetlight, Night and Stars)


1947

Last work Draußen vor der Tür ('The Man Outside')
