From 1919

Begins a bookselling apprenticeship; attends lectures in Theatre, Literary History and Philosophy in Greifswald, Hamburg, Berlin and Würzburg without ever officially registering


1926 - 1927

Dramaturge and assistant director at the Würzburg town theatre

 

1931 - 1933

Features editor at the Berlin newspaper Börsen-Courier (Stock Market Courier) and later head of department


1938

Emigrates to the Netherlands

 

1938 - 1945

Returns to Germany; writes screenplays for the UFA (Universum Film AG: Germany’s leading film production company from the Weimar era to World War II) and the Bavaria-Film-Kunst


From 1945 Resides in Munich; travels through Europe and the USA

1948 Marries Marion Ulrich

1962 Georg Büchner Prize

Literature Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Arts
