Jürgen Becker’s book Felder ('Fields') is a fragmentary record of everyday experiences of contemporary life. They all take place in Cologne, his birthplace, where the author writes about his ‘fields’ of memory and takes the reader on an unusual tour through the city. ‘When I recount something, I don’t have a particular goal in mind or a predetermined thread that the plot has to follow. For me, telling a story is a kind of path or way, when something is still on the way, something that itself decides what is actually going to be said and related.’

The midnight celebrations on the 1st February 1926, a significant hour in world history, were reported on by Cologne’s newspaper, the Kölnische Zeitung: At the stroke of midnight a roar and a surge swept through the crowd of people.
