The Rostock Seven

The number seven plays an important role in Rostock’s cityscape. The city has seven symbols, or ‘Kennewohrn’, as they are called in the Low German dialect. ‘The Rostock Seven’ is a translation of a rhyme in the Low German dialect.

Seven doors to St Mary’s Church,
Seven streets from the market square,
Seven gates that lead into the country,
Seven merchants’ bridges by the beach,
Seven spires that tower on the town hall,
Seven bells (of seven churches) that ring as one,
Seven lime trees in the Rose Garden:
These are the symbols of Rostock.
