Walter Kempowski: Hamit

Following Sirius and Alkor, Hamit (equivalent to the word 'Heimat' in standard German, meaning something along the lines of homeland or home town), is the third volume of Kempowski’s diaries. In 1990, after 40 years away, he visits the place of his birth, Rostock, with his brother. A moving story of drawing close to what had been left behind.

God, what a mess! The Kröpeliner Strasse was not that bad, in places even rather nicely re-done, but in front of and behind it: ugh! In the side streets dilapidated houses with collapsed roofs, piles of rubbish, the streets full of potholes, puddles. And over it all, smog from brown coal, poisonous stuff that settles in your lungs.
