Jürgen Banscherus was born in Remscheid-Lennep, Germany, in 1949. He studied German, philosophy, journalism, music and political science in Münster and Bonn and later worked in journalism, publishing and adult education, among other areas.
In 1985 his first children's book was published: "Keine Hosenträger für Oya" (No Suspenders for Oya). Jürgen Banscherus has been a full-time writer since 1989. His books have been translated into 15 languages and have received many awards. In 1997 he received the Ruhrgebiet Literary Award for his complete works, and in 2010 won the Annette von Droste Hülshoff Award. Jürgen Banscherus now lives in Witte, is married and has two children.
