Franz Hohler was born in Biel in Switzerland in 1943. He performs cabaret, and is a singer/songwriter. After completing high school he began studying German and Romance languages and literature in Zurich. Already an accomplished musician in those days, he frequently performed in public. The success of these solo appearances eventually prompted him to leave university and focus on his music.
Since 1970 he has been successfully writing novels for children. In 1978 he gained wide renown for the childrens' book "Tschipo", which received the Oldenburger Award for Children and Young Adult Literature. With "Der Riese und die Erdbeerkonfitüre" (The Giant and the Strawberry Jam) he won the Swiss Teen Literature Award in 1994 .
