Gudrun Mebs was born in Bad Mergentheim, Germany, and grew up in Frankfurt am Main. After training as an actor she had engagements at various theatres between 1962 and 1982.
Since 1980 Mebs has been writing children's books and illustrating them herself. She also writes scripts for the TV programme Siebenstein, which is broadcast by Germany's ZDF network.
Her fame as a writer came above all from her "Oma und Frieder" stories. In addition, she has written children's books with sensitive treatment of themes generally regarded as taboo. She has received many awards for her work.
Gudrun Mebs now lives and writes in Munich and Tuscany.
