Christine Nöstlinger was born in Vienna in 1936. She studied applied graphic design at the Vienna Academy of Applied Arts and worked in that profession for several years. Her first book, "Die feuerrote Friederike", was published in 1970 and was an immediate success, as was her next novel, "Wir pfeifen auf den Gurkenkönig" (1972). Since that time she has published more than one hundred picture books and books for children and young adults.
Her books for young readers have come to epitomise a "new" children's and young people's literature and are highly respected, as evidenced by the many honours and awards she has received at home and abroad and the many languages into which her books have been translated. For her complete works she has received such awards as the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis (1973), the Hans Christian Andersen Award (1984) and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (2003).
Christine Nöstlinger lives in Vienna and on a farm in Lower Austria.
