Hermann Schulz was born in 1938 in Nkalinzi in present-day Tanzania as the son of a German missionary, but grew up in Germany. After completing an apprenticeship as a bookseller and working in a mine, he travelled widely, including journeys in South America, Africa and the Near East. He subsequently headed the Peter Hammer Verlag in Wuppertal, Germany, from 1967 until 2001.
Schulz published his first non-fiction children's book, "Jackeline. Ein Mädchen in Nicaragua" in 1990 in cooperation with Deutsche Welthungerhilfe (German Agro Action). Since then he has published a number of critically acclaimed novels for children and teens.
His children's book "Auf dem Strom", published in 1998, has been translated into many different languages.
Hermann Schulz lives in Wuppertal.
