Verena Ballhaus was born in Gmünden in the Lower Franconia region in 1951. She studied painting, graphic arts and art education at the Fine Arts Academy in Munich. After graduating she worked first as a theatre set designer and designed posters before starting in 1985 to illustrate picture books, children's literature and school textbooks. The illustrations of Verena Ballhaus have received many awards.
Today she lives with her four children in Munich.
