Manfred Bofinger was born in Berlin in 1941. After completing secondary school he apprenticed as a typesetter and worked as a typographer with the Berlin-based satirical magazin Eulenspiegel from 1961 until 1968. He then began working independently as a graphic artist and cartoonist.
Manfred Bofinger illustrated more than 300 books and also wrote stories for children. In 1981 he won the Arts Award of the GDR. He was among the best-known and most versatile figures in children's literature in the GDR. His illustrations and children's books have also met with wide acclaim in the reunited Germany. Among children he is affectionately known as "Bofi".
Manfred Bofinger lived with his wife in Berlin until his death on January 8, 2006.
