Fischer Verlag, Frankfurt am Main, 2017Two girls who have been close friends since childhood were the main characters in Zsuzsa Bánk‘s successful novel Die hellen Tage (The Bright Days), published in 2011. Márta and Johanna, the heroines of her new book, have also been best friends since their childhood days. Meanwhile, however, they have grown up. Now in their midforties, they are painfully aware that half their life is gone.
Márta, a writer in Frankfurt and mother of three young children, is fighting with, or rather more often than not, against her husband for the scarce resources of time and money. Johanna, a teacher, has cancer and has a painful separation behind her; she lives on her own in a small village in the Black Forest. This friendship is a fixed point in both their lives; they exchange emails, often daily, and certainly every few days. Márta is torn between love of her children and love of her profession, while Johanna cannot exorcise the demons of her past and broods a great deal over her childhood home that held no fixed point for her. (…) Who writes such emails? But these two women and their very personal tone have become so familiar that they do not leave you in peace. And then fate strikes them both. Just one thing is for sure - their friendship will endure anything.
