© Wołowiec, Wydawnictwo Czarne, 2013Over nearly a year, Duve documents her experiment with different diets – not to lose weight, but to explore the question of what is an ethically acceptable diet. She researches where the food she buys in the supermarket comes from. She asks herself whether the conditions of meat and milk production are morally acceptable. First, Duve changes her diet to organic products; later she becomes a vegetarian, a vegan and finally a fruitarian. (…)

Duve takes a very conscientious approach in her experiment. She explains the principles of the different types of diet and states the arguments in their favour. She keeps a record of her food purchases and presents her difficulties in finding suitable products. In her vegetarian phase, she gives a detailed description of the principles of industrial livestock farming, but also of the conditions on so-called organic farms. (…) She joins a group of animal welfare campaigners and releases chickens from a factory farm. (…)

Duve’s book makes us realise that the meat chop on our plate did not come like that from a factory. That the meat that we gulp down in a few minutes was an animal. What do we know about the conditions in which it lived and how it died?
