Wagner, Zappa and a Yellow Shark – The Leipzig Jazz Festival 2013 (09/27/2013)
From 27 September until 6 October 2013, the Leipzig Jazz Festival will be putting Richard Wagner in the spotlight.

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth and the 20th anniversary of rock musician Frank Zappa’s death, the Leipzig Jazz Club will be combining the works of the two artists. In the Berlin Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra’s version of the Song of the Nibelungs, for example, Siegfried will be battling not against a dragon but against the yellow shark from Zappa’s album of the same name.
In addition, the programme will include performances in which saxophonist Joshua Redman, modern jazz singer Carla Bley and pianist Bugge Wesseltoft will be taking to the stage with house DJ Henrik Schwarz and double bass player Dan Berglund. At Leipzig’s Monument to the Battle of the Nations, music experimentalist Thomas Hertel will be presenting theatrale prozession mit mund & knie, a musical theatre play that commemorates the victims of war. 2013 marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig.
