born in 1962 in Basel, Switzerland; training as theatre painter at the Stadttheater Bern; studied stage design under Axel Manthey and Klaus Zehelein in Vienna; assistant to Axel Manthey at the Staatsoper Stuttgart.
Gerstner has worked as a stage and costume designer since 1992 at many theatres, including the Staatstheater Stuttgart, the Luzern Theater, the Munich Kammerspiele, the Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the schauspielhannover, the Salzburg Festival, and the Theater Basel. Since 2000 a close collaboration has connected her with director Sebastian Nübling and theatre musician Lars Wittershagen, and since his play Savages –Man with Sad Eyes also with the author Händl Klaus.
In 2002 she was chosen as the upcoming stage designer by the critics poll in the journal Theater heute for her sets for John Gabriel Borkmann, and in 2006 as Stage Designer of the Year for her work on Händl Klaus’s Dark Alluring World.
