The COMEDIA Theater Köln is North-Rhine/Westphalia’s largest children’s and youth theatre, with two stages, five rehearsal rooms and up to 600 seats. It was set up in Würzburg in 1974, and from 1982 onwards, under the name of "Ömmes und Oimel", it performed in a building in central Cologne. A new building was constructed for the theatre in 2009, which includes a historical workshop and rehearsal building. Upon moving in, the theatre changed its original name to COMEDIA Theater Köln.

The theatre works with guest performers who have long-term associations with the theatre. Four to five productions for children are staged here each season, and the theatre’s current repertoire comprises 15 titles for all age groups. The children’s theatre develops plays and adapts illustrated books or classic works of children’s (theatre) literature. The Junges Theater section shows productions that deal with the day-to-day life of its young audiences.

The COMEDIA Theaterwerkstatt offers a theatre education programme with short workshops or discussions with the artists, and with courses or workshop performances for school classes. In addition, courses, workshops and youth clubs are offered during leisure time. For a number of years, the COMEDIA Theaterwerkstatt has also been working with the Faculty of Education at the University of Cologne and with Cologne’s Universities of Applied Sciences in initial and in-service teacher training.

SPIELARTEN, the annual nine-city festival initiated by the COMEDIA Theater, presents outstanding independent children’s and youth theatre productions from North-Rhine/Westphalia, Holland and Belgium.
