Since its foundation in 1919, the Schauspielhaus Bochum has been one of Germany’s best known and most highly-reputed theatres. The Junges Schauspielhaus section was set up at the Schauspielhaus Bochum in 2000 and has been directed by Martina van Boxen since 2005. The Junges Schauspielhaus has its own performance venue, the Melachthonsaal, which is very close to the Schauspielhaus. The programme includes both the theatre’s own productions and guest performances for children and young people from the age of two to eighteen.

The theatre education sessions offered at the Junges Schauspielhauses are multifaceted and include preparation for and follow-ups to theatre visits, advanced teacher training, theatre clubs, dance classes, directing sessions and regular workshops. The young people have the opportunity to stage their own productions in the different youth clubs. In the “Schools on the Move“ programme, pupils from different schools and different types of schools come together to take part in a theatre project.
