The Junges Schauspielhaus has been a separate section of the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus since 1976. It has its own performance venue in the hall of an old torpedo factory. It stages contemporary theatre for all generations - children, young people and adults – with a repertoire including fairy tales, myths and contemporary political plays. The Junges Schauspielhaus has a permanent ensemble consisting of seven actors and actresses. Under the directorship of Stefan Fischer-Fels, the small section of the Schauspielhaus developed to become an authors’ theatre that premieres new plays, thus attracting interest beyond the city’s limits. In the 2011/2012 season, Barbara Kantel, who previously directed the Junges DT, the youth section of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, took over from Stefan Fischer-Fels as artistic director.
As well as staging theatre productions, the Junges Schauspielhaus also offers children’s and youth clubs for different age groups. The selected participants are given the opportunity to tread the boards in their own productions. Workshops, preparations for and follow-ups to theatre visits are offered for school classes.
