The Junges Schauspielhaus is the second section of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, with its own artistic director. It was founded in autumn 2005 at the initiative of Friedrich Schirmer and soon made a name for itself under the directorship of Klaus Schumacher. The Ensemble consists of five actors and actresses, who are supplemented by different guest performers in a variety of productions. Its repertoire comprises as many as fifteen different children’s and youth productions. The programme includes adaptations of illustrated books, literature and films, adaptations of classics, contemporary plays, play developments and commissioned plays. The main performance venues at the Schauspielhaus are the Malersaal for major productions and the Rangfoyer for smaller productions. In addition, mobile productions are staged in classrooms, bars and exhibition rooms.
Another important aspect of the theatre’s work is its theatre education programme. The Junges Schauspielhaus also established a new series in the 2009/2010 season entitled “Utopia“, which uses discursive and artistic formats to address questions relating to the future and to relations between the generations. Since then, the Junges Schauspielhaus has had an additional venue, the “Utopia Mobile Bus“, which travels to perform in different districts of Hamburg and in school playgrounds.
