The Kinder- und Jugendtheater in Freiburg was set up in 1973 by students and young actors around director Dieter Kümmel. In 1989, the small hall of the Marienbad in Freiburg, formerly the local swimming baths, was converted into a theatre. Since then, Freiburg has had its own children’s and youth theatre with its own performance venue. Depending on the set design, it can seat audiences of up to 250 people of all age groups. A second, smaller performance venue was added in the 2002/2003 season at the same location, the “Kesselhaus”, which has 80 seats.

The theatre employs a permanent ensemble of eight actors and actresses, who are joined by guest performers as required. The productions are targeted at children, young people and adults. Small, intimate narrative theatre productions alternate with major ensemble plays. The ensemble’s artistic work has gained an international reputation through guest performances in many countries in Europe and beyond. Since 2003, the focus of its guest performance activities has been on cultural exchange with Iran, but the theatre is also involved in intensive exchange with theatres in Russia.

Another aspect of the theatre’s work is in communicating through its cooperation with schools and institutions for children and young people. The theatre puts on three to four performances for schools each week, enabling classes of children to attend. This experience is prepared or followed up by drama teachers at the respective institutions. The theatre is also involved in theatre education projects in cooperation with Freiburg secondary schools.
