“Schwarze Milch” (Black Milk) by Holger Schober
Holger Schober was born in Graz in 1976. After reading German, English and acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar, he completed training in culture management. Since 1997, the author has written for the stage as well as cinema and television scripts and has been artistic director at Theater KINETIS. In 2005, he joined the management team at the Theater an der Gumpendorfer Straße in Vienna, and from 2009 to 2011 he was director of the children’s and youth theatre u/hof: at the Landestheater Linz. His plays have been published by Verlag Autorenagentur and Rowohlt.
17-year-old Thomas becomes painfully aware of the atrocities committed during the Third Reich for the first time on a class trip to Auschwitz. His previous ineptitude at dealing with politically questionable classmates is suddenly wiped away. He burns his passport and refuses to speak German. Unfortunately, his foreign language skills are rather poor. Then he meets Tomasz, a Polish policeman, whose attitude towards German-Polish history is marked by his very personal experiences. A complex relationship develops between the two, transcending all the (very funny) language barriers and raising questions about responsibility, xenophobia and the burden of the past.
Again and again, Schober touches young viewers in their own world, including the themes of stress at school and teenage infatuations. The play is loud, fast-paced and impetuous, especially at the end when Thomas and Bella get to know each other. Thus, he creates an enlightening play devoid of uptight political correctness.
