Ludwig has written over 30 plays for children, young people and adults. Since 1979 he has been a member of PEN and has received various awards, including the German Culture Prize of the Munich Foundation for the Promotion of the Arts, the Mühlheim Dramatist’s Prize, the Carl-von-Ossietzky medal, the ASSITEJ International Honorary President Prize as well as the Federal Cross of Merit. In 2011 he handed over the artistic directorship of the GRIPS theatre to his successor Stefan Fischer-Fels but has continued to work for the theatre as its manager and as an author.

Amazing things happen in Berlin: a little rich girl goes begging at the Friedrichstraße station – and a poor boy manages to foil the plans of a thief. Volker Ludwig’s new version of Kästner’s classic novel about a wonderful friendship between two children is set in the here and now, revolving around a neglected kid from an affluent family and a child living in poverty, here in our midst…

“Pünktchen und Anton“, written by Erich Kästner in 1931 during the Great Depression, was one of the first realistic, big-city novels for children. Two neglected children plunge – unnoticed by their inattentive parents – headfirst into the adventure of the big city Berlin. In Volker Ludwig’s version this story seems more topical than ever. It focuses on the question of justice from the viewpoint of the children, in a world where the gap between rich and poor is widening dramatically.
