A play on the topic of Euthanasia in the Nazi dictatorship – a documentary fiction about a long neglected theme in German history. In the Nazi era a young woman is sent to a psychiatric clinic. In this play that is based on biographical and documentary material, as well as on our vision of the inner life of the characters – victim and perpetrator – we follow her horrific fate up to the point when she is transported to a concentration camp.
Starting point is the documented case of Anna Lehnkering, known as Änne, who was a patient in the psychiatric clinic at Bedburg-Hau from 1936 to 1940 and was murdered on 7.März 1940 in Grafeneck. We believe that the present day and age cannot really be understood without engaging with the past. Hence this play is also a parable for human rights, for dealing with otherness and for the question as to the “value” of a human being. In this connection, the question of the denigration of others, the rejection of everything that doesn’t fit the norm, that is different and strange, plays an alarmingly topical role.
