Philipp Löhle was born in 1978 at Ravensburg. He studied history, drama, media studies and German literature in Erlangen and Rome. He wrote his first plays while he was still a student, and has also worked as a journalist and filmmaker (short films, documentaries, internships).
The author was awarded the Young Dramatists' Prize of the Federation of German Industry for Alias Gospodin. In addition to this, Alias Gospodin (premiere: Schauspielhaus Bochum) was nominated for the 2008 Mülheim Dramatists Prize. At the 2007 Berlin Theatertreffen, Philipp Löhle received the Stückemarkt Commission sponsored by the Federal Agency for Civic Education. Lilly Link won the Jury Award at the Heidelberg Stückemarkt in 2008.
Philipp Löhle was writer-in-residence at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin from 2008 to 2010 and the Nationaltheater Mannheim during the 2011/2012 season. He has been appointed writer-in-residence for the 2012/2013 season at the Staatstheater Mainz, where he is also working as a director.
