Crystal Pite was born in 1970 in Terrace, British Columbia. She started taking ballet lessons as early as the age of four and trained at a private studio in Victoria. In 1988, she joined the Ballet British Columbia, where her choreographic work Between the Bliss and Me was added to the repertoire in 1989. She danced with Ballett Frankfurt under William Forsythe from 1996 to 2001. In 2001, she founded her own company in Vancouver, Kidd Pivot.

In addition to this, she spent three years as choreographer-in-residence at Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal. She was honoured with the Clifford E. Lee Choreographic Award in 1995, received the Paul D. Fleck Fellowship in 2004 and won the Alcan Performing Arts Award in 2006. She has worked as a choreographer for companies that include Ballett Frankfurt, Nederlands Dans Theater 1, Alberta Ballet, Dance Victoria and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet. As of 2010, her company will be based at the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt am Main, where it will be known as Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM.
