Aufenthaltsgesetz (Residence Act)

The Act on the Residence, Economic Activity and Integration of Foreigners in the Federal Territory (“Residence Act”), defines the conditions under which migrants may enter Germany and live and work there. The Residence Act forms the main part of the Immigration Act, of which it comprises Article 1. Section 30 of the Residence Act states among other things that a spouse from a non-EU country may only join a migrant in Germany if the spouse is able to communicate in the German language on a basic level. Section 43 of the Residence Act, together with the Ordinance on Integration Courses, forms the legal basis for the integration courses.
