“Diyanet” is the abbreviation for Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı, the Presidency of Religious Affairs in Turkey and the country’s highest Islamic authority. Diyanet follows and promotes the orthodox Sunni Islam tradition.

Diyanet is responsible for around 80,000 mosques in Turkey and employs the clerics (imams) who run them. It is also responsible for DITIB, (Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs), one of the largest federations of Turkish-Islamic mosque associations in Germany.
