Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (DTZ) (German Test for Immigrants)

The German Test for Immigrants (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer – DTZ) is the final examination taken at the end of the integration courses. It was developed by the Goethe-Institut and telc GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and was introduced on 1 July 2009 to replace the Zertifikat Deutsch as the final examination. The German Test for Immigrants is a graded language examination ranging from level A2 to B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is tailored specifically to meet the communication needs of immigrants.

A learner is considered to have passed the German Test for Immigrants if they attain the A2 level of proficiency. If they do not achieve B1 level, they can extend the integration course by up to 300 hours, in order to achieve “adequate German language skills” at B1 level, which is the goal of the integration course.

No charge is made for taking the German Test for Immigrants; candidates may also re-sit the test once free of charge.

A sample test paper, the examination handbook and a vocabulary list can be downloaded from the Goethe-Institut website.
