Netzwerke (Networks)

Migration processes are very often associated with collectively organised migrant networks which are established at the local level but operate on a transnational basis, facilitating contacts and pooling knowledge about migration routes, immigration law, employment opportunities and housing. This creates dynamic migrant economies, which among other things act as a channel for goods and information from the regions of origin. As these networks often relate to an “imagined community” (Benedict Anderson) which also performs a role in the collective attribution of meaning, the networks are also a vehicle for the formation of “ethnoscapes”, in which ethnicity and origin are often idealised, giving meaning despite spatial distances and changed sociocultural conditions of life.
