This glossary explains frequently used terms relating to the language/integration nexus and guides you through the apparent complexities of the relevant concepts and terminology.

telc GmbH

“telc” stands for “The European Language Certificates”. telc GmbH is a subsidiary of the German Adult Education Association. telc’s activities comprise test development, valuation and certification and the provision of training for teachers, examiners and raters. All telc’s examinations are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The tests of relevance to the (pre-)integration courses – Start Deutsch 1 / telc Deutsch A1, Start Deutsch 2 / telc Deutsch A2, the German Test for Immigrants (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer – DTZ), which is the final examination taken at the end of the integration courses, and Zertifikat Deutsch/telc Deutsch B1 – were developed by the Goethe-Institut and telc GmbH. Zertifikat-Deutsch is no longer offered by the Goethe-Institut.

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), which is responsible for implementing the integration courses, has commissioned telc GmbH to manage the German Test for Immigrants (DTZ).
