The BAMF teacher training is conducted in a full-length form with 140 lesson units and in an abridged form with 70 units as a two-week or four-week classroom-based course at the Goethe-Institut Mannheim.

Both additional qualification courses include methodology and didactics of German as a Second Language as well as information about the structure and target group of integration courses. The full-length additional qualification courses additionally include sitting in on integration courses and a trial lesson (planning and holding one lesson unit). You can find more detailed information on the course content here.

In addition, the Goethe-Institut Mannheim offers additional qualification courses for teachers in orientation courses (supplemental additional qualification courses).

After completion of the classroom phase at the Goethe-Institut, the participants must draw up a portfolio in electronic form and submit it to the Goethe-Institut for assessment and evaluation within five weeks after the end of the seminar.

The conditions for issuing the accreditation to teach integration courses by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees are the timely receipt and the positive assessment of the portfolio as well as proven participation in the classroom phase.

Accreditation of teachers for integration courses

The success of integration courses depends on qualified teachers. They are distinguished by significant educational and intercultural skills and by high professional qualifications.

Legal bases
Teachers who teach German as a Second Language in the integration course must prove successful completion of studies in German as a Foreign Language or German as a Second Language (Section 15 (1) Ordinance on Integration Courses).

If these professional qualifications are not available, teachers can only be accredited if they have attended an additional qualification course designated by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) (Section 15 (2) Ordinance on Integration Courses).

Accreditation procedure
Accreditation of teachers is done centrally through the BAMF. You must apply through a course provider approved by the Federal Office. This means you must have the application stamped by a facility offering integration courses and send it to the BAMF:
Application for accreditation from the BAMF

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees makes its decision based on the documents submitted and announces its decision in writing. You can enrol for additional qualification courses at the Goethe-Institut with this written notice on participation in an abridged or full-length additional qualification course.

You will find indications of whether and what additional qualification courses are worth considering for you based on your qualifications and teaching experience on the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), in particular in this matrix.
