Festival and Convention

From 14 to 16 June, 2007, the Goethe-Institut and its partners presented the big festival „The power of language” at the academy of arts located at Pariser Platz in Berlin (Brandenburger Gate). Fascinating exhibitions, installations and live performances concerning the role and meaning of language in an internationalized world, as well as various exciting top level panel discussions and lectures were presented for free to a broad public as well as to a professional audience.

For two years, the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with the Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft (Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities in Germany) and many other partners has been focusing on the “power of language” in approximately 30 projects all over the world: Topics like multilingualism and identity, cultural diversity, change in speech, academic speech and language policy were discussed from different perspectives during symposia and exhibitions, but also at photo, movie and language competitions. The finale of this project was celebrated with the festival “The power of language”.

The festival was open to both the interested public as well as professionals from all over the world. The objective was to collate and consolidate experiences from all global projects. With a host of diverse events and presentations revolving around the subject of language and power, the festival became an international forum for the discussion of the role and significance of language in an internationalized world.

In addition to a stimulating programme with exciting presentations and information for the general public, the festival also hosted an academic convention. This convention included three sections: "Multilingualism and Identity" (in cooperation with the Institut für Deutsche Sprache), "Linguistic Policy” (in cooperation with the Alexander von Humboldt foundation) and "Language in science” (in cooperation with the DAAD - Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst).

The visit of the festival was free of charge.
