The knowledge of other languages and thus of other cultures plays a key role in the co-existence of the societies of Europe and in their success in an integrating world. The conclusions of the European Council (Barcelona, 15-16 March 2002) and the European Commission’s 2004 - 2006 action plan to promote language learning and linguistic diversity therefore rightly call for each European citizen to be able to communicate well in at least two other languages apart from his native language.
The symposium aims to support the development towards more foreign language skills with a debate in which experts from various European countries respond to questions like:
What role do foreign language skills play in the public debate in your country?
What role do foreign language skills play in everyday working life?
What stimulus is being provided by education policy?
What direction are teaching specialists thinking in?
How are the schools responding to these challenges?
What forward-looking school projects are in place?
What wishes are on the agenda?
The symposium, which will be held on 8 June 2007, will be opened by Languages Commissioner Leonard Orban and will take the form of various round-table discussions.
