You’ve reached the top: examination components.

  1. Written examination held in groups (630 minutes)

    • In the composition section, you give a well-constructed logical presentation of a topic of your choice, containing pro and contra arguments and giving your own personal opinion.
    • In the comprehension test, you will read a text from the humanities or literature, answer questions correctly and in the appropriate style, and recount parts of the text in your own words.
    • In the articulacy test, you will reword a text to prove your advanced linguistic skills and stylistic ability.
    • In the dictation, you will show that you can grasp the content of the text during dictation and reproduce it with correct grammar and spelling.
    • In the questions on your optional subject (German literature, science or economics), you will give a detailed answer in correct language to one question on each of two books you have chosen.
    • In the questions on regional studies, you must answer a question on each of two books with a regional focus. During this task you will show that, by reading these books, you have become knowledgeable about aspects of the history, current affairs or politics of the Federal Republic of Germany and that you can present these correctly and fluently.

  2. Individual oral examination (25 minutes)

  3. You will be given 40 minutes to prepare a text, which you then read out loud with appropriate rhythm and intonation. You give a brief drafted speech on a topic you have chosen (10 minutes). Afterwards, you will hold a conversation on this topic and discuss it with the two examiners, which may sometimes lead to disagreements (10 minutes).

Assessment

The Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom is conducted uniformly all over the world. The written examination papers are marked centrally in Munich by examiners from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Goethe-Institut. These examiners work independently of one another but apply uniform criteria. Students’ performance in the oral exam is assessed by two examiners at the examination centre in question.
