Cooperating partners

In addition to its own facilities, the Goethe-Institut takes advantage of close and long-term alliances with suitable partners overseas.

“Foreign-German cultural societies” are international organizations and cultural institutions with the objective of undertaking cultural dialogue with Germany. They receive annual project funds from the Goethe-Institut and chiefly offer language courses and cultural programmes.

36 of these have concluded cooperation agreements with the Goethe-Institut and bear the name “Goethe Centre.” They undertake to set up their language and cultural work according to the principles and quality standards of the Goethe-Institut.

The Goethe-Institut promotes public libraries and similar establishments in the host countries.

Around the world, there are alliances with 76 German reading rooms, Dialogue Points and information and learning centres. They are equipped with media by the Goethe-Institut and convey, in alignment to the demands of the respective locations, information about the German language and culture as well as an up-to-date image of Germany.

The worldwide language programmes of the Goethe-Institut are supplemented by 46 Language Learning Centres operated by our cooperating partners. They offer language courses oriented to the Goethe-Institut model and carry out the internationally accredited examinations of the Goethe-Institut.

The Goethe-Institut supports the Language Learning Centres with teacher training, donations of teaching materials and equipment and regular consulting on aspects of methodology, didactics and management.

The 256 licensed examination partners are entitled to carry out the Goethe-Institut language exams on their own responsibility. Most of them also offer preparatory language courses and are advised by the Goethe-Institutes.
