The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO)

The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) is the official youth orchestra of the EU. It brings the most talented young musicians from all 27 EU countries together with a view to overcoming cultural boundaries and spreading this spirit worldwide in its concerts.
The orchestra is under the aegis of the President of the European Commission and the heads of the EU Member States.
The high level of musicianship and commitment of the young members of the EUYO has garnered outstanding international repute for the orchestra, which is regularly compared with the best orchestras in the world. In the past the orchestra has continually given concerts with such world-renowned guest conductors and soloists as Daniel Barenboim, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Zubin Mehta, Vasily Petrenko, Sir Georg Solti, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Margaret Price, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Bruno Leonardo Gelber, Nigel Kennedy, and Radu Lupu, to name just a few.
Its current artistic director is Vladimir Ashkenazy.
The EUYO performs in all the major European cities, concert halls and festivals. In its capacity as an EU “Goodwill Ambassador”, it has toured China, Hong Kong, Japan, India, North and South America, Eastern Europe, Russia and the Baltic States to resounding success.
Auditons
The annual auditions for the EUYO in Germany are held by the Laienmusizieren und Förderung des musikalischen Nachwuchses section of the Goethe-Institut in Munich on behalf of the German Foreign Office.
The 140-odd members of the orchestra are selected annually from amongst over 4,000 candidates aged 14–24 from the Member States of the European Union. Every year, moreover, the incumbent members are required to compete in an audition with the new candidates to keep their place in the orchestra.
