Residency programme for musicians and composers from Germany

One of the main objects of the Goethe-Institut is to boost intercultural exchange and international cultural networks through collaborative projects and coproductions.
Artists performing or giving workshops abroad generally don’t stay long enough to thoroughly explore musical forms and styles abroad or start up lasting projects.
Hence the possibility, since 2009, to apply for a grant from the German Foreign Office to work abroad for a longer period up to six weeks.

The objects of a residency abroad may be:

• To engage in research and preparations for major productions in Germany and/or abroad
• To work on joint compositions/coproductions with partners in Germany and/or abroad
• To network with artists and cultural “multipliers”

Both professional musicians/composers based in Germany, and Goethe-Instituts abroad, are eligible for a grant.

Applications should be as concrete as possible, including the following information:

• Brief description of the substantive goals of residency abroad
• Itinerary, including planned duration of the trip and a list of places, people and institutions you intend to visit
• Artists should outline the connection, if any, with Goethe-Instituts abroad
• Biography

The following requirements should be met:

• The project should heavily involve the local music scene abroad.
• And it should have a significant effect on the music scene in the host country and/or in Germany.
• Applying artists should be prepared to develop joint events, such as workshops, lectures, concerts etc. with the local Goethe-Institut during their residency.

The following are ineligible for grants:

• Concert tours
• Residency abroad for academic research and teaching purposes

Grants cover:

• Travel and accommodation expenses, as a rule for one person only
• A weekly allowance of €500
• Organizational support from the local Goethe-Institut, if desired, as far as possible
