Everyone’s talking about Europe. But, the debates are often quite abstract or focus on finance. What about the more than 700 million European people? We went out and met them. Well, not all of them, but six of the most interesting, a street cleaner as well as a football legend.

Six German journalists set out to meet these Europeans. In recent months, they travelled to editorial departments in other European countries for two to four weeks each, courtesy of the Goethe-Institut’s Close-Up project, to gain new insights into Europe. “Europa, wie geht’s?” (Europe, what’s happening?) is the question leading them on.

For The Latest at Goethe, each of the journalists captured an encounter with a person from their host country. For instance a German novelist who has been driving his Alfa Romeo around Trieste for 15 years and has made the town on the Adriatic immortal in his crime novels. And a Lithuanian street cleaner, who reminds us of Beppo in German author Michael Ende’s book Momo. And ... well, why don’t you just read on yourself:
