Awarded: Three men of letters receive the Goethe Medal (Goethe-Medaille)

The awardees of this year's Goethe Medal have been decided: Swede Lars Gustafsson, Romanian Victor Marian Scoradet and Norwegian Sverre Dahl will be honoured for their services to the German language.

Since 1955 the Goethe-Institut has awarded the Goethe Medal (Goethe-Medaille) to foreign personalities who have done great service to the German language and international cultural relations with their work. Past award winners include Pierre Bourdieu, Jorge Semprún, Sir Ernst Gombrich, György Ligeti, Sir Karl Raimund Popper, Billy Wilder and Daniel Barenboim.

At Weimar Palace on the 260th anniversary of Goethe's birth, 28 August 2009, Klaus-Dieter Lehmann, the president of the Goethe-Institut will present the official decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany to Swedish writer and philosopher Lars Gustafsson, Norwegian translator Sverre Dahl and Romanian theatre critic and translator Victor Marian Scoradet.

The award ceremony is held in close partnership with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the City of Weimar. The cultural fringe programme is being organized in cooperation with "pèlerinages" Kunstfest Weimar.
