In hindsight, it seems inevitable: the Soviet Union had to collapse. But, how did the end begin? How did intellectual freedom slowly find its footing under Brezhnev? A remarkable series now retraces the decline, from the first cracks in the system to the final collapse.

The multimedia documentary project by Andrei Nekrasov, György Dalos and Jean-François Colosimo was supported by the Goethe-Institut. The focus of the project is the six-part film series Farewell Comrades!, the first part of which Machtrausch will be broadcast on Tuesday, 24 January at 9:45 PM on Arte. It looks at the years 1975 to 1979.
