Art is Ours
For 103 years, the 8th of March has been designated International Women’s Day. Although a lot has happened over this span of time, in many countries women still have fewer rights than men. The Goethe-Institut is therefore dedicating many of its events to the international women’s movement. It creates platforms for networking and dialogue. The recent workshop ArtsWork 2012: Refiguring Women in Johannesburg showed how women get in on the arts scene. Among others, the celebrated photographer Zanele Muholi demonstrated that women are nobody’s fools when it comes to positioning, gender and identity. Her series Faces and Phases made it all the way to the Documenta.
