Let There Be Light
The man throwing a handful of light onto a white shag carpet doesn’t look like a dancer at first glance. But first impressions can be deceiving. Deception is also a central idea of the performance Cover Up by the dance trio Mamaza. It opened this year’s Dance Umbrella Festival in Johannesburg with a confusing game of dance and light. The flokati becomes a stage and the three dancers stand in the limelight, yet stay on the ground.
